The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen L. Carter

I guess summer is a good time to read long books, and I have just read the 2nd in a row.  Not sure, but it seems that anyone writing a long book really needs a better editor!   The Emperor of Ocean Park is a mystery (most of the book you are trying to figure out if it’s a murder mystery or not) written by a lawyer – who have a special knack to use 15 words when 2 or 3 will do.  The writing is pleasant, and at least for the beginning, the leisurely pace is nice.  But at some point it starts to drag and you begin to nick-pick a few things.  Then (not untypical for mysteries) the author does not include key things that happen to the main character so when it does (finally at 824 pages) pull together at the end, you are mad.  Oh well – still better than what’s on TV.
