The Hummingbird's Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea
The Hummingbird’s Daughter is the August bookclub book (yes, I’m way ahead of my self… of course, I have not read July’s book, The Diary of Ann Frank.. we are planning another virtual discussion in a couple of weeks!). But I digress..
To sum up this book, I liked the story, but not the writing. The beginning was slow, a lot of people and not much story. The story picked up towards the middle, and was really quite interesting. But I didn’t find it very believable, so I was surprised by the section at the end with the author talking about 20 years of research, and the basis on real people in the author’s family. I think the author struggled to write a story mostly about women, the story came across with a very male point of view (and I won’t attempt to explain that!)
My first thought is I would have liked it more if I knew more Mexican history, a little more Spanish, and the historical basis.. Like I needed to be smarter. OR maybe the author could have written the story in a way this would not have mattered … maybe I have explained it.

HI DEB YOU ARE WAY AHEAD...BUT IT'S A BIG BOOK SO I BETTER GET STARTED. I HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED ANNE FRANK YET BUT HOPE TO GET IT DONE BY JULY 20...IT WILL BE MY 4TH TIME IN 50 YRS SO IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF MY RESPONSE IS THE SAME AS IT WAS YEARS AGO.

I had not read this since high school and definitely appreciated it more now. I give it a 10 and my word is "innocence". (I've started H's Daughter and I'm finding it difficult to get into, so I need the encouragement to keep going.
