Atonement by Ian Mcewan
I was in a hurry to read Atonement (a bit of ahead of the mid-January bookclub meeting) so I could finish before I heard too much about the movie. Through the first part of the book, I kept wondering, how could they make a movie of this? It’s wonderful writing, my one-word description is “graceful”. But really not much you would believe would make a successful movie today. The book is told from multiple points of view but never confusing and disjointed (which tends to be typical in most writing of this style). The story starts in the30’s in the English countryside, then moves to World War 2 (so you can start to believe they would have some footage for a movie). By the end of the book, you do realize there is a story that would appeal to movie mass audiences, although you can’t believe it would be nearly as good as the book!
So, has anyone read the book and seen the movie? What do you think?
