The Law of Similars
The one good thing that I can say about traveling for work is the time to just read. On my recent trip to Korea, I read 2 books plus watched 5 movies, read 3 technical papers, 1 newspaper, and still had time to nap. Amazing what you can get done in 30 hours. So, here are the books:
The Law of Similars by Chris Bohjalian. This was my favorite of the trip. Chris (yes, our bookclub knows him by first name only) does a fabulous job of taking ordinary people, telling ordinary lies, and turning it into a real page turning novel. I do have to say this seemed to get off to a slow start, it starts at the end and doesn’t seem to make any sense for a while, but then the story starts to pull together. I suspect what I really need to get a hold now is Midwives, considered to be one of his best stories.
The 5th Horseman by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. This was an OK read, but really hit me as one of those series that has gone too long, without enough new story (this is the 5th in the Women’s Murder Club). And I had another peeve about this book… it was set as a bunch of very short chapters, with lots of space in between. I suspect that it could have easily been printed in under 300 pages, instead of 432 (and lightened my load!).

Hi Deb. Yes, it's hard to find a Chris Bohjalian book that I haven't liked although some more than others. And Midwives is definitely one of his best. Especially if you like a "psychological" mystery, not knowing until the last page if she is guilty or not!
Thanks for the update on Farmer's Market...looking forward to Sept.
