Who would you pick to be?
Cane River by Lalita Tademy. This was a fascinating book to read, especially reading right after Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. (who is the genius who picks the books to read?) Cane River is a story of 4 generations of women who lived on small farms in Louisiana. There are striking similarities between the stories: devastating contagious diseases, famine and floods, salt as a valued spice, categories of people without rights, and a focus on family. But there are even bigger differences, ones that are much more difficult to describe... but I'm sure we will have some great discussion on Tuesday! Pageturners: your comments please: Suzette and Lilly were born about the same time (1825 and 1828). If you had to pick, who would you choose to be?

Without any doubt, I would rather be Suzette. First of all because I would choose America (even as a slave) to China. Also, Suzette, had a large loving family and support system.

Hi -- I didn't read/finish Cane River, so you think that would preclude me from commenting, but no.... I like names that are of flowers, (and without any knowledge of Suzanne or her life), I'm going with Lily. Even though we're gut-wretched by the footbinding and all else, we have to remember that she doesn't have the luxury of perspective. For who she was, when she was, she had a pretty good life.

Hi Berta--gosh, after all these years, I discover you like names that are of flowers. I find this very surprising--don't ask me why.
Flower names seem old-fashioned and I guess I perceive you as a "modern" young lady. I'm trying to think of other flower names, but all that comes to mind is Lily, Rose and Daisy...and of course, yours truly,
Violet
(aka Snowflower--not to be mistaken with Sunflower)

I don't know if you listen to NPR in the evenings, but the host of the weeknight jazz show is Blaze Lantana. There's a modern flower name for you!
And just for the record, I would pick to be Suzette..

I went to school with a guy named Blaise. He was very cool but very short...even shorter than me. My dad would tell you that I was named after a flower..."bleeding heart" liberal.
