The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

I love the book group I belong to..  we have a great mix of books, women, and ideas.  February’s book was The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (our classic for the year).  I didn’t really enjoy the book, but starting to figure out why it considered “the great American novel”.  The “breathtaking lyricism” (as described on the back cover) was too poetic for my taste (too many words), the women were idiots, and the men shallow.  What is so very American about this? Let’s hope its not idiot women and shallow men!  Maybe it was great influx of new money and how it mixed with old money, the pursuit of celebrity… maybe not too different from today.

Off to order next month’s book:  Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
